Just starting out...please help

przez rcarville » So paź 30, 2010 8:29 pm

So I am quite new to coding, but have made a couple websites with microsoft publisher and other templates.
I really want to create my own site from scratch.

I have some understanding on html and css, but need to learn much more. I have skimmed thru the tutorials, but can't wait to really dig into the codes. This is so neat!

The question I have is do people normally type out the codes or copy and paste?

thanks for any input, i'm sure I will have many more questions

Hi Rebecca,

Welcome to HTML.net :)

I would recommend that you start with doing your own coding as much as possible. This is the only way to learn HTML and CSS - by trial and error.

Personally, I get a lot inspiration from other sites. And do copy and paste as well - but mostly from my own coding.

Cood luck! I am looking forward to see all your questions here in the forums.

If you really want to make a website stand out, its good if you have a some photoshop skills to make images. Also you might want to get more into CSS, as it really helps in knowing how div elements work. Also don't forget that, practice makes perfect :) Well almost perfect anyway.

I am working with Wordpress and just wondered, should I focus more on learning CSS at this point. So that I can edit the code when the theme won't do what I want it to do? Or do I have to know PHP as well? I am new to coding and get a bit nervous when experimenting with things.

It seems only logical to me to start with HTML, CSS and some JS. And once you are comfortable with those get into PHP and WordPress. But in my opinion, WordPress should be one of your final goals ... that is if you wish to write themes for WP.

If you won't make themes then just ignore everything I've said :)

Cheers!

CubeSquare napisał(a):Hello Rebecca,

The HTML.net Tutorials are special. They are practically built on the psychology of success. Just reading through Lesson 3 will make you a theorical expert on mark-up. And Lesson 4 does what no other tutorials take the time to do. It teaches you how to Save As with an html file extension by expanding the Save as type: (expansion dialog menu) to choose All Files and then Save. At the same time, you are learning the basic web template (skeleton) from which all websites begin. It really takes hours of practice with the basic elements before they feel natural. But by Lesson 6, you will be well on your way. I chose to write a review of each lesson as a means of practicing the template, opening and closing the new tags I was learning to wrtie and, also as a means of convincing myself that I knew what I was talking about. I'm sure you'll find a method that's right for you. I love your enthusiasm!
